- Are a member of the family Mictyridae (soldier crabs)
- Can grow to 2.5cm across
- Found on Australia’s coastlines from VIC north around to WA
- Congregate in large “armies” on estuarine sand/mud flats at low tide
- Filter the sand for food with their mouths and leave behind tiny pellets of sand
- Retreat into the ground like a corkscrew at high tide or when disturbed
- Harmless
- Popular with children
- Good bait for bream
