- Is a member of the family Serranidae (sea basses, cods and groupers)
- Can grow to 45cm in length
- Similar looking to it’s western equivalent the Western Wirrah (Acanthistius serratus)
- Frequents coastal reef environments
- Bottom-dwelling, often seen hanging in caves and under ledges
- Found in Australia’s eastern temperate waters from southern QLD to TAS
- Occurs solitary
- Commonly caught by rock fishermen
- Poor eating
